About

The camera came first.

William Torrillo is a photographer, filmmaker, creative director and hospitality professional based in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. He is the founder of Mango Media and currently serves as Chief Creative Officer of The Gourmet Vacation.

He was an artist and a photographer long before he was anything else. The kitchen came in the middle, and it changed how he sees.

The detour

A decade in professional kitchens.

The camera was always there first. Making pictures is the thing he has done longest and the thing everything else grew out of. What came next was an unusual turn: he went to culinary school.

William graduated from Johnson & Wales University in North Miami in 2002 with a degree in Culinary Arts, then began at The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne as a Culinary Department Trainer and was part of the opening team at Cioppino, which Esquire named one of the top twenty five restaurants in North America.

A decade in kitchens taught him things a photographer does not otherwise learn: how a plate is built, how little time it has before it loses its life, what genuine service looks like when nobody is posing, and how the atmosphere of a room changes at the moment it begins to fill.

Then he went back to the camera, carrying all of it. That is the difference. Knowing where to stand in a working kitchen, and knowing when a dish is about to die under the lights, is not something you learn from behind a lens.

Twelve consecutive years

South Beach Wine & Food Festival.

Working alongside his friend Chef Roberto Leoci of Savannah, Georgia, and Executive Chef Frédéric Delaire at the Loews Hotel in Miami Beach, William documented the festival's annual Tribute Dinner and many of its most memorable culinary events over twelve consecutive years.

Dinners honouring or featuring Charlie Trotter, Nobu Matsuhisa, Alain Ducasse, Daniel Boulud, Juan Mari Arzak, Emeril Lagasse, Bobby Flay, Jonathan Waxman and many other influential chefs from around the world.

Those years allowed him to photograph culinary history from inside the room. Not simply the finished plates, but the chefs, kitchens, friendships, pressure, movement and rituals behind them. It became the natural bridge between a life in fine dining and the visual career that followed.

The road here

Sea Island, then St. Thomas.

William later joined Sea Island Resorts in Georgia, spending four years as a staff photographer working closely with the resort's marketing department during the Bill Jones era. He documented the property's architecture, cuisine, service, events, coastal landscape and daily rhythm, and developed an intimate understanding of how luxury hospitality should be photographed and presented.

In 2012 he moved to St. Thomas and founded Mango Media. The photography came first, followed by film, branding, websites and digital experiences as clients increasingly asked who would take the imagery and turn it into a complete story.

Over the past twenty five years he has photographed luxury hotels, resorts, restaurants, yachts, destinations and cultural experiences throughout the Caribbean and around the world, for Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton, Marriott, Hilton, The Moorings and numerous independent hotels, tourism organisations and hospitality brands.

His photography has appeared in international travel publications including National Geographic, and his work in the Virgin Islands was featured during a weeklong segment on Discovery Channel.

How we work

The person you hire is the person who shows up.

The person who photographs or films your property is also the person who develops the creative direction, edits the work, writes the proposal, and answers when a campaign changes on a Sunday.

No account layer, no junior sent in your place, no brief passed down a chain until the intent is gone. Crew and specialists come in where a production needs them, and the work stays under one set of hands from the first conversation to the final file.

It is an approach shaped by decades in hospitality and a belief that the strongest imagery comes from understanding an operation as deeply as the people who run it.

Ripeness

A process, not a switch. Good work arrives when it is ready, and most of the skill is knowing when that is.

Craft

Made with intention. Every frame, every page and every system is a decision somebody made on purpose.

Clarity

Storytelling that connects. Plain language, honest quotes, no jargon in the proposal or the invoice.

Impact

Work that moves business and communities forward. If it does not do something measurable, it was decoration.

Beyond the Caribbean

Place, culture, food and the sea.

William's work is shaped by travel and an enduring curiosity about the relationship between place, culture, food and the sea. His journeys to Croatia in particular became deeply personal explorations. After years documenting the Caribbean, he found another region where natural beauty, maritime tradition, food and cultural identity remain closely connected.

Sailing the Dalmatian Coast, exploring hidden bays, historic fishing villages and quiet islands, he recognised many of the same rhythms that first drew him to the Virgin Islands. The photographs aim to move beyond scenery, capturing not only how a destination looks but the spirit, history and people that give it meaning.

Beyond client work

Special projects.

We build and operate our own network of Caribbean travel platforms. Not client work, and not a portfolio piece. They exist because they are useful, and because running them tells us what visitors search for before they ever arrive.

Who we work with

Three kinds of client.

Hospitality

Resorts, hotels, villas, charters and restaurants across the USVI, BVI and wider Caribbean. Most of what we do.

Civic

Government agencies and public organisations needing communication, data platforms and internal tools that actually work.

Local business

Shops, services and operators across the territory. Small business packages exist for exactly this reason.
